Serbian Foreign Minister Demands Guarantees of Rights for Serbs in Kosovo

The foreign minister of Serbia and Montenegro, Vuk Draskovic, has called for the United Nations to guarantee the rights of all non-ethnic Albanians in Kosovo.

Mr. Draskovic told the U.N. General Assembly Thursday that there are no people in Europe whose rights are violated more than Kosovo Serbs.

He said the creation of another Albanian state in the Balkans would be a serious obstacle to stability in the area.

Kosovo is part of Serbia, but is administered by the United Nations. The area's ethnic Albanian majority wants independence. U.N. officials have yet to announce a date for starting talks on the final status of Kosovo.

Earlier Thursday, Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski told the General Assembly his country is dedicated to democratic and economic reform, with an eye on membership in NATO and the European Union.
