Accused Cuban Plane Bomber Posada Carriles Drops Bid for US Asylum

A Cuban exile and former U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative wanted by Venezuela on terrorism charges has dropped his request for asylum in the United States.

But at a hearing in El Paso, Texas Wednesday, lawyers for 77-year-old Luis Posada Carriles said they will continue to argue against his deportation to Venezuela.

A hearing on the issue is scheduled for September 26.

Lawyers for Posada Carriles, who was trained by the CIA in the 1960s, argue he could face torture if sent to Venezuela.

Posada Carriles has been accused of plotting the 1976 bombing of a Cuban jetliner in which 73 people were killed. He denies involvement. He has been wanted in Venezuela since escaping from prison there in 1985 as he was awaiting retrial in the case.
