Police in Saudi Arabia have clashed with militants near the holy city of Mecca. Reports of casualties could not be confirmed.
Saudi security forces said militants opened fire on police at a checkpoint outside Mecca. Security forces are reported to have pursued several suspects to nearby buildings. The number of militants involved in the attack was not clear.
The attack came as Saudi men voted for local council seats in the third and final round of the kingdom's first nationwide elections.
Saudi Arabia launched a crackdown on militants in 2003, following a series of attacks by al-Qaida-linked militants on foreign residential compounds and government facilities in the kingdom.
