EU Concerned at Military Build-Up in Eritrea, Ethiopia

Feb 14, 2005

A European Union official has expressed concern that a build-up of troops on both sides of the Eritrea-Ethiopia border could lead to new fighting.

Dutch Ambassador to Ethiopia Rob Vermaas says EU officials urge both nations to refrain from acts that could lead to renewed hostilities.

He says sustainable peace between the rivals is key to development and stability in the region.

Mr. Vermaas also called on Eritrea and Ethiopia to implement the decision of an independent commission aimed at resolving a border dispute.

Both sides agreed to accept the 2002 ruling to end a war that killed 70,000 people.

But last year Ethiopia called for new talks to discuss handing over the key town of Badme to Eritrea. Eritrea has rejected the talks.
