AU: Sudan Appears to Be Preparing Military Offensive in Darfur
Dec 17, 2004
The commander of the African Union's observer force in Darfur, Sudan, says the Sudanese government appears to be preparing a major military offensive against rebels in the region.
Nigerian General Festus Okonkwo says the situation in Darfur has become more dangerous, with large quantities of arms and ammunition pouring into the region over the last two weeks. He called Darfur a time bomb that could explode at any moment, with recent truce violations by all the warring sides.
The AU commander briefed delegates Friday in Abuja, Nigeria, where talks to end the crisis in Darfur have been stalled amid accusations from both sides of continued attacks.
In another development, a recently formed third rebel group in Darfur - the National Movement for Reform and Development - signed a cease-fire agreement with the Sudanese government Friday at separate peace talks in Chad.
