Two Aid Workers Killed in Darfur
Dec 13, 2004 London/New York
Two aid workers have been killed in Sudan's war-torn Darfur region, an aid agency says.
UK-based Save the Children said on Monday two of its workers were shot dead Sunday in South Darfur.
Abhakar el Tayeb, a Medical Assistant, and mechanic Yacoub Abdelnabi Ahmed were travelling in a convoy of clearly marked humanitarian vehicles when they came under fire on the main road between Mershing and Duma, the charity said.
Save the Children said it had suspended its humanitarian operations in South Darfur for the time being.
“We deplore this brutal killing of humanitarian workers in Darfur. Our deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of our Sudanese colleague,” said Ken Caldwell, Save the Children's Director of International Operations.
This is the second fatal incident involving Save the Children staff in Darfur in the last two months. On 10 October two staff members were killed by a landmine in North Darfur.
The United Nations Special Representative for Sudan, Jan Pronk, issued a statement in New York deploring the deaths, saying the brutal action should be condemned in the strongest terms.
Mr. Pronk called on all parties to respect the principles of international humanitarian law, most notably the fact that humanitarian workers are neutral and impartial.
He also reminded the Government of Sudan of its responsibility to protect the safety and security of humanitarian workers in Sudan.
