Darfur Peace Talks Resume Saturday
Dec 11, 2004
A new round of peace talks on the conflict in Sudan's western Darfur region resumes Saturday in Nigeria, aimed at ending the 22-month-old conflict.
The new talks between the Sudanese government and two Darfur-based rebel groups will open against a backdrop of increased violence in the region and little progress on previous agreements regarding humanitarian and security issues.
United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan said earlier this week that Darfur was in chaos, plagued by cease-fire violations, rapes and the burning of villages.
The talks in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, were scheduled to open Friday but were postponed by 24 hours.
Assane Ba - a spokesman for the African Union, which is brokering the negotiations, said logistical problems caused the delay.
Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the war and 1.6 million others displaced.
