Sudan Government, Darfur Rebels Resume Peace Talks
Dec 10, 2004
The Sudanese government and two main rebel groups are set to resume peace talks Friday in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in an effort to end the 22-month-old conflict in Sudan's western Darfur region.
The talks resume one day after the U.N. special representative to Sudan, Jan Pronk, warned that the talks will fail unless both sides refrain from violence.
Mr. Pronk say the latest series of violent clashes breached both a cease-fire and promises by both sides on humanitarian and security issues.
The United Nations says more than 1.8 million people have been displaced by the conflict or forced to live as refugees in neighboring Chad.
Pro-government Arab militias are blamed for most of the atrocities that targeted black civilians.
