UN Wants Sudan Peace by Year's End
Nov 19, 2004 Nairobi
The U.N. Security Council is holding out the prospect of a major infusion of aid for Sudan if the government and a southern rebel group keep their promise to end a long-running civil war by the end of this year.
The 15-member Security Council gave unanimous approval to a resolution which offers financial aid if a peace deal is struck, but threatens no sanctions if negotiations fail.
The Council meeting in Nairobi focused primarily on the 21-year war between Sudan and a southern rebel group. But there were also expressions of concern about the more recent fighting in the western Darfur region between government-backed Arab militias and two black rebel groups.
The current Council president, U.S. Ambassador John Danforth, said the Darfur crisis must be contained.
"I want to be very clear. The violence and atrocities being perpetrated in Darfur must end now. You have heard this message clearly from the Security Council -- heed it. I cannot emphasize this point more strongly."
The Sudanese government and the southern rebel group signed a pledge to conclude a final peace agreement by the end of the year.
