Annan Calls for End of 'Human Suffering' in Sudan
Nov 18, 2004 Nairobi
The U.N. Security Council has begun two days of meetings in Nairobi, Kenya, seeking ways to curb the ongoing violence in Sudan.
Underscoring the Council's concern about Sudan, these are the first sessions the 15-member body has held outside its New York headquarters in 14 years.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan told the Council it must push for a final settlement between Sudan and a southern rebel group, and also turn its attention to the violence in the western Darfur region.
"The conflict in Darfur also demands your attention. The terrible situation in Darfur has been brought about mainly by deliberate acts of violence against civilians, including widespread killing and rape. Because of the magnitude and the human suffering in the region, the conflict remains a burning concern," he said.
The Council expects to pass a resolution Friday offering Sudan financial incentives in exchange for a final peace deal with the southern rebels.
